Guavas are a delicious tropical fruit. Their scientific name is Psidium guajava and in Spanish it is called "guayaba." There are two main varieties. Some are pink fleshed while others have white flesh. Both pink and white guavas are very fragrant when ripe. They can be eaten fresh and used to make juice, jams, deserts, or pastries. They are used to make the popular Cuban pastry called "pastelito de guayaba." Our trees have either flowers or fruit almost all year long. However, in Florida they have two main seasons with one being in the summer and another in the winter. During their main seasons they are prolific producers.
