Shipping

Do you have tracking numbers on your shipments?
All shipments are shipped with a tracking number. You can find that tracking number in the email that was sent to you when your item was shipped.
How are the seeds packaged?
The seeds are packaged in hand folded paper seed packets. This method of seed packaging allows us to avoid glue and tape when creating the seed packets. Once you have planted all of your seeds you can reuse the seed packet for other seeds or unfold the packet and recycle it.
How do you ship the plants and plant material?
Live plants and plant material are shipped with tracking through USPS priority mail or UPS. We seal them in plastic bags to prevent them from drying out. For products that do not dry out we ship them without a plastic bag to avoid waste.
How do you ship the seeds?
The seeds are shipped in a padded mailer with tracking. For orders with a smaller quantity of packets we use a plastic bubble mailer that is made with recycled plastic content. For larger orders we use a 100% compostable and recyclable padded paper mailer.

Growing Practices

How are the plants and seeds grown?
At Our Tropical Soil we try to avoid sprays of any kind, even if they are certified organic. This includes things like neem oil, diatomaceous earth, and BT. We avoid synthetic fertilizers and instead grow healthy soil in order to grow healthy plants. If there is a serious pest outbreak then we will consider using a certified organic or DIY spray to control the problem.
How do you test for the viability of your seeds?
We normally pick out, at random, 10 or 20 seeds of each kind to test. We put them in containers lined with moist paper towels. Depending on the seeds germination requirements, we will put the container somewhere dark or somewhere that receives light. We check on the seeds every day to see how many have germinated. For example, if we test 10 seeds and 7 germinate then the seeds have a germination rate of 70%.
Where are the plants and seeds grown?
Many of our plants and seeds are grown at our farm. However, at times we also purchase wholesale plants and seeds from other growers. We value transparency so every product that is grown at our farm will say "Grown by Our Tropical Soil."
