Custard Apple

The red custard apple is a rare tropical fruit with custard like flesh that is a striking white and pink color. Its scientific name is Annona reticulata. The fruit is also known in Spanish as corazón or cherimoya Cubana. The custard apple is part of the Annona family and is a close relative of the sugar apple. The flesh is segmented, creamy, and very sweet with a thin dark red skin. If you have tried a sugar apple then you can expect the custard apple to taste similar but the texture of is much denser and creamier. On average, the custard apple grows quite large and can reach up to 6 inches in diameter. Overall, the fruit has a heart shape, however, it can sometimes have a more irregular shape. When the fruit is unripe it is very hard and the skin is a dark purple color. As the fruit matures and ripens it softens while the skin becomes more vibrant and takes on a more red like color. It is eaten fresh and used in certain sweet recipes. We enjoy eating custard apple fresh by scooping it out with a spoon.
