Gourds are members of the cucurbit family that are typically grown for ornamental purposes. They can be used for things likes fall decor, birdhouses, or bowls. The mature luffa gourd is used as a sponge for skin exfoliation and household cleaning. Some gourds can be eaten when the fruit is very young and tender. Gourds are grown in a similar manner to winter squash species. Many gourds are climbing vines that grow vigorously and need plenty of support.
