Description
Green Malabar spinach is an incredible leafy green to grow that is originally from Indonesia. It is mild enough to be eaten in a salad and heat tolerant enough to grow right through a South Florida summer! This is a vining plant that produces large and succulent green leaves. You can grow this vine up a trellis or just let it sprawl on the ground. The malabar spinach is not a spinach cultivar, instead it is an entirely different species.
A bonus is the small edible berry like fruits that the vines produce. They are a brilliant purple color and can be used for dying food or fabrics. The plants are not frost hardy so they must be grown as an annual in colder climates, but they can be grown as a perennial in warmer climates. Once you have an established plant you can also propagate it by cuttings.
