Description

Yard long beans are tasty and abundant producers. This cultivar is not as long as the "yard long" cultivars, so it only grows to about 8 inches long. The green beans have specks of purple, which makes them easier to see when harvesting. As all long beans do, these love the hot and humid weather of South Florida since they are from Thailand. We plant them in the beginning of the summer and they grow right through the heat like a champ. These are best harvested when the pods are still smooth and don't have any indentations from the seeds inside. If left to mature more than this they might be too tough to eat.

There are new flower buds that grow on the stem right next to the green bean, so harvesting is done by holding the stem and then rotating the green bean till it detaches. You want to do it gently so the new flowers don't break off. These are eaten raw or cooked. They can be used in any green bean recipe. This is a climbing variety, however, we have had success growing it without any support by just letting it sprawl along the ground. The beans grow on these long stems that stick out of the of sprawling plants, thanks to this, it is not too difficult to find them. Plant them around 6 inches apart and in full sun to light shade. We like to soak the seeds in water overnight to ensure they all germinate.
