I really appreciate your mood and all your efforts in promoting edible plant culture online. Maintaining a robust online presence as a gardener is challenging. Also i definitely identify with being overwhelmed with harvest and preservation.

A little effort here in the subtropics often yields tremendous results if we cultivate plants that are happy here.

A previous commenter mentioned Boldo.. I believe this is two different plants.

Cuban oregano is more widespread than Brazilian Boldo (Coleus barbatus or also known as Plectranthus barbatus) which is a well known medicinal plant but not used so much, if at all in cooking. Boldo grows taller and seems to flower more often than Cuban oregano which for me rarely flowers.

Cuban oregano is one of my favorite yet so underappreciated plants. I always suggest it for novice foodscapers because it is so forgiving and even thrives with neglect.

In India Cuban oregano, in addition to uses you already mentioned, is used medicinally for colds and sore throat. Chewing a leaf to bathe the throat is soothing due to the thymal, as is inhaling steam from pouring boiling water over chopped leaves. In cooking it is also used as whole leaf pakoras (like tempura but made with chickpea flour )..

Thank you for finding the latin name. I recognize this plant by its Brazilian name: 'boldo'. We used it as a raw vegetable in smoothies, but one should not use it every day for a long period, because then it can cause stomach ache (which indeed happened in our case. But it subsided fast when we stopped using it).

Here in our region in Brasil (subtropical region, 8 months arid, 4 months rain) it is a pioneer plant. Whenever i plant a young tree, I simply put cuttings of this herb around it in the soil. Because they grow fast, up to 3 meters tall, and protect the little trees against the harsh midday sun.

They give blue flowers during the dry season. This helps the hummingbirds to survive when there are no other flowers around.

In a fertile soil the leafs become big. In the arid months they shrink and seem to sleep. Like you wrote, they propagate when you simply put them horizontally on the soil.
